TOGETHER WE CAN LEVERAGE THE POWER OF FINANCING FOR NCDs

Sustainable, people-centered, locally led health financing is one of the most powerful tools we have to strengthen a country’s capacity to respond to the rising burden of noncommunicable diseases—including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, and mental and neurological disorders. This is especially critical in low- and middle-income countries, where 77% of NCD deaths occur. By improving health financing systems that advance universal health coverage and strengthen primary healthcare, we are working towards better health outcomes for all.

How we make it possible

THE CHALLENGE

Why do we focus on health system financing for NCDs?

Each year, 41 million people die from NCDs. The global economic burden of these diseases—projected at USD 47 trillion in healthcare costs and lost productivity from 2010 to 2030—remains main vastly underfunded, capturing less than 2% of global health development assistance. Countries facing this burden often lack the essential resources, capacity, and support needed to effectively close the financing gap, which undermines their ability to respond to the NCD challenge, threatening individual health and national progress.
